Mrs. Sabins was downstate for a family funeral. Most classes worked on their travel journals. Fourth hour worked on leads and a reading the other classes had done on previous days.
Today we began looking at leads and beginnings for writing. We examined the five ways to start a piece of writing which will get a reader interested. Students practiced writing leads in groups and are asked to apply that to their travel journal for tomorrow. The types of leads and examples are in the handouts folder.
After silent reading and recording grades in their blue binders, students reviewed the requirements for the task and began collecting information to write their travel journals. All materials are on Google classroom and the final essay will be turned in on google classroom. There will be 5 more days on the computer to complete this task and it is due on November 2, by the end of the day. To be included in the marking period, it needs to be in before Friday, the 4th.
Travel Journal: Your goal is to write a journal entry while visiting one of the 58 National Parks. Must include location, why and when established. To complete this task you will take the role of visitor. The audience for this task will be the Daughters of the American Revolution. Argue why this particular national park should be considered a national treasure. Title page, Works Cited, Journal of 600-1000 words in size 12 or 14, default font, double spaced, default margins. Rubrics: Assessed wholistically on Organising (Criteria B), Using Language (Criteria D), Analysing (Criteria A), and Producing Text (Criteria C). 2nd hour completed progress monitoring. 3rd and 4th completed a T4 in pairs on a travel journal example to examine features of the text. 6th hour completed a T4 and questions on "Paul Revere's Ride."
2nd hour had an assembly with a magician. 3rd and 4th finally completed progress monitoring, and 6th hour did an activity with the poem "Paul Revere's Ride." Book Reviews due Friday.
2nd and 3rd hours were in the lab finishing ans turning in projects, 4th hour was teaching the sixth graders how to T4, and 6th hour completed progress monitoring in reading and writing, and finished the T4 on travel journals in partners.
All classes had the opportunity to work on and turn in their projects. Unfortunately, due to the thunderstorm, 2nd and 3rd hours faced a glitch in the zdrives and will also have tomorrow to work. Reminder that book reviews are due Friday.
Some classes are in the lab while others will be T4 on two different items which will be graded. One is an article called "Eight Ways to Tell if a Website is Reliable" and the other is a travel journal which will be completed in partners. The lab is not available every day, every class, so I have to juggle the schedules around, but I do make sure every class gets the same amount of work time. All articles are available under the handouts tab in the first marking period folder. Powerschool is currently locked out and grades cannot be added or changed until Monday, so please be patient if a paper was completed and turned in or redone because I cannot get in and adjust grades until Monday.
Taking notes on a graphic organizer on rhetoric and the art of persuasion. Also working on National Park Collage or Movie. Students may choose to use www.kizoa.com to create a movie that has the same elements as the collage all in one movie. All projects are to be turned in on Google Classroom with no exceptions. Students are encouraged to review the requirements and the rubrics BEFORE turning in the project. Kizoa movies may be posted here for all to see. |
